VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Mailings
Groups of volunteers come to DCH in November, February and March to help fold, stuff, and stamp large mailings.
Time commitment: Week day for 2-4 hours.
Flexible schedule.

Plant Sale Volunteer
Each year in May, during Mothers Day weekend, we have a plant sale at two community gardens in Wilmington; one on Friday and one on Saturday. Volunteers help the week of the sale at DCH putting pre-orders together. Then on the days of the sale, volunteers help set up, move plants, and help customers with plant questions and ideas.
Time commitment: Pulling pre-orders, week day 2-4 hours. Friday 1-4 hours and/or Saturday 2-6 hours. Flexible schedule.

Community Garden Volunteer
In spring and fall volunteers work with staff and community gardeners weeding, mulching, and doing general clean up in community gardens throughout Wilmington.
Time commitment: Week day or weekend 2-4 hours.

Judge City Gardens Contest
On a Saturday morning in July teams of volunteers judges visit 4-7 gardens entered in the Wilmington City Gardens Contest. Judging criteria forms are provided so no prior gardening experience or knowledge is required. Breakfast and lunch are provided.
Time commitment: Saturday morning, 3-4 hours.

Photographer
Volunteer photographers document events, photograph our gardens, and photograph DCH plantings around Wilmington. A digital camera is required.
Time commitment: Year round, flexible schedule.
Lecture registration
During our “Help for the Home Gardener” lecture series in January, February or March, volunteers check-in registrants, collect payment, and attend lecture for free.
Time commitment: Week day evening, approximately 1 hour. Can volunteer for one or more lectures.

Secret Garden Volunteer
Every other Friday, year round, a group of volunteers work with preschool children from the Ministry of Caring daycare. Volunteers work in the classroom and at the Children’s Secret Garden a block from the daycare. Topics relating to plants, horticulture, gardening, and the environment are the focus.
Time commitment: Every other Friday, 9 to noon.
