Nonmembers: $15 per lecture; $75 for series of 6 lectures

Winter-flowering Shrubs*
Tuesday, January 24, 7 pm
Co-sponsored by the Garden Club of Wilmington and Morris Arboretum
What could be better then blooms on a dreary winter day? Join Michael Buffin to plan your winter-time garden. He’ll show us how to have flowers year round, shrub combinations that work, and how to use winter sunlight to its best advantage. Buffin currently works in southern England where he advises on 70 National Trust historic gardens. He honed his mastery of woody plants for many years as Curator at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens in Hampshire, England, where he maintained and developed the largest collection of hardy woody plants in the world. His book by the same title will be available for purchase after the lecture.

Phil’s Phavorites*
Wednesday, February 1, 7 pm
With unmatched plant knowledge and humor, professional gardener and woodies expert Phil Normandy, will show the plants he thinks are particularly gardenworthy. He’ll focus on their ornamental value, culture and siting, and potential combinations for mid-Atlantic gardens. Plant Collections Manager at Brookside Gardens, a 50-acre public display garden in Wheaton, Maryland, Normandy manages over 15 themed gardens at Brookside and teaches at George Washington University.

Containers: Pots with Purpose*
Wednesday, February 8, 7 pm
Co-sponsored by Always the Garden and Wallace Landscape Associates, Inc.
Look at the breadth of container gardening styles and techniques with Dan Benarcik, teacher, garden writer, and horticulturist at Chanticleer garden where he oversees the tropical garden. There he specializes in tropicals, sub-tropicals, and tender perennials for seasonal display. He’ll discuss different types of containers and their respective advantages, as well as some of his favorite plants for container culture.

Wednesday, February 15, 7 pm
Co-sponsored by Garden Valley Nursery
Join lecturer, teacher, photographer, and plantsman, Patrick Cullina, for an exploration of new plant varieties and lesser-knowns that deserve more attention. Geared towards Wilmington landscapes, he’ll examine good sources of plant information and discuss appropriate seedlings, cultivars, and hybrids. Cullina is Vice President of Horticulture at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He spent 10 years as Associate Director at The Rutgers Gardens, the botanical garden at Rutgers University, and is a general inspiration to the New York City gardening world.

The Design Process: A Guided Tour*
Wednesday, February 22, 7 pm
Co-sponsored by University of Delaware Botanic Garden Friends
People are familiar with the end product of a successful design process - a beautiful and enjoyable garden. However, they rarely see the controlled and creative chaos that leads up to the final product. Join Tres Fromme, Longwood’s planning and design leader, for a guided tour of the dynamic thinking and exploration of ideas necessary for creating compelling and memorable gardens. Fromme will share an accessible and useable framework for approaching garden design.
