The 28th annual Rare Plant Auction® at Longwood Gardens is just around the corner! We’re hoping you’re looking forward to it as much as we are. New this year are three extraordinary items on a grander scale than has ever been offered in the history of the event. Come prepared to win one of these at the Live Auction!

1.   A mature chestnut-leaved oak (Quercus castaneifolia) delivered and planted
This majestic species of oak is rarely-seen in this area.  Rarer still is the size of this specimen – already 25 feet tall – and the offer to plant it within a 30-mile radius of Longwood Gardens (negotiable). The deep, rich green leaves are remarkably similar to a chestnut’s. This specimen has been donated by Ticklewood Nursery and planting services will be supplied by Tree Tops Tree Preservation. Procured as a seedling from the National Arboretum and known to grow to 100 feet, this large specimen is already off to an excellent start. Carefully root-pruned and tended, it will be dug while still dormant in time for the Auction and planted with a 90-inch tree spade

2.   A Garden Room
Imagine a pleasant, shady spot in the garden, surrounded by boxwoods and anchored by flowering trees and shrubs. Gateway Garden Center, Quality Greenhouses, Saunder Brothers, Inc., and Ticklewood Nursery have cooperated to donate the elements of a beautiful outdoor room. The plant selection includes 21 premiere boxwoods (9 Buxus sempervirens 'Dee Runk', 4 'Vardar Valley' and 18 Buxus microphylla var. japonica 'Morris Dwarf'), as well as three Appalachian Red Eastern Redbud trees and four dozen shade-loving perennials (12 Epimedium grandiflorum 'Lilafee', 12 Brunnera macrophylla 'Looking Glass', 12 Helleborus 'Optimism' and 12 Tassel Fern, Polystichum polyblepharum). A metal garden bench and two urns will provide the finishing touches to transform corner of your property into a peaceful alcove.

3.   A Grove of 5 paperbark maples (Acer griseum) delivered and planted
A smaller, trifoliate maple, Acer griseum is best known for the quality of its exfoliating bark which curls off in thin sheets leaving behind a polished surface that shines throughout the seasons. The emerging leaves are delicate blue-green and turn burnished red in fall. The branching pattern of this lovely tree reaches approximately 30 feet. Donated by Manor View Farms and Fine Garden Creations, the five specimens being offered are already 10 feet tall. When planted together as a grove – which service is included in this offer – these maples will become a focal point of your garden.
