Pollinators and pollination were one of the themes highlighted in the 2009 selection of plants. Some of the auction collections featured plants that provide nectar and sustenance, attracting a variety of insects and birds.

Some specimen plants with a Philadelphia heritage were also featured.  For instance, plant varieties linked to John Bartram, the 18th century father of American botany, included Franklinia alatamaha and Fothergilla.

Another theme in 2009 was kitchen gardens and “grow your own food” plants. Attendees were encouraged to become localvores with opportunities to bid on organic heirloom vegetable plants, organic compost and culinary herbs. Fruit bearing trees and fruit-bearing patio plants were also be available.
