When Sir John Thouron donated a Clivia miniata var. citrina to an
annual plant sale, board directors Kathy Andersen, Helen Detchon
and Dick Lighty lit upon its rare value. They envisioned a unique
opportunity – an auction of rare plants. Helen Detchon, whose son
Hank Davis co-chaired the 25th anniversary celebration, mobilized the
Center’s volunteers. Dick served as auctioneer of an all-live auction.
Mac Rea Parker, of New York City, won what he came for and
the Clivia miniata var. citrina won its place symbolizing
the successful Rare Plant Auction®.
Proceeds from the Rare Plant Auction® help fund The Greening Program,
a nationally-recognized public and private partnership
that stimulates community pride and ownership.
The Greening Program sustains and encourages community gardening projects throughout the neighborhoods of Wilmington, Delaware, transforming lots and streets into inspired garden spaces infused with community pride.
